Last week Slovakia handed Bulgaria an astonishing 82-0 loss in women’s international hockey play. This type of score belongs in the NFL, or college football . . . if that. Getting goose egged while giving up 82 points should get these women deported from their own countries. But after this international massacre caught the American media’s attention, it got me to thinking about the worst beat downs in America’s history. The kind of beatings that would leave any man running while questioning their manhood, if there were any left. Here are the 20 worst beat downs in sports history:
1) Tiger Woods in the 2000 US Open.
Tiger is well, Tiger. In any sensible sports fanatic’s head, they will tell you that Tiger Woods is the best athlete to ever walk this earth. His swing, majestic. His mind, clear. His decisions, flawless. I don’t play golf, but when I watched Tiger crush the field by 15 strokes in 2000, I saw perfection.
2) Michael Phelps vs the World
Here’s his stat line:
-
Aug. 10 - 400-meter Individual Medley »
- Gold (WR)
- Aug. 11
- 4×100-meter Freestyle Relay »
- Gold (WR)
- Aug. 12
- 200-meter Freestyle »
- Gold (WR)
- Aug. 13
- 200-meter Butterfly »
- Gold (WR)
- Aug. 13
- 4×200 Freestyle Relay »
- Gold (WR)
- Aug. 15
- 200-meter Individual Medley »
- Gold (WR)
- Aug. 16
- 100-meter Butterfly »
- Gold
- Aug. 17
- 4×100-meter Medley Relay»
- Gold (WR)
Eight gold medals and 7 world records in one showing at the Olympics. These stats are just ridiculous on any level, and anyone will agree with that.
3) The 1996 Fiesta Bowl - Undefeated Titans Nebraska vs. Florida
I thought the defeat of the near ‘perfect’ Patriots this season was a smack down, but in 1996 the Fiesta Bowl could not have been more hyped up. I don’t have much love for the BCS, but in this case, it was a game that would be talked about for the ages . . . in a bad sense. End result: Nebraska 62 : Florida 24, for the national title. Ouch.
4) The 1973 Triple Crown Winner - Secritariat.
I don’t have to say anything about this one.
5) Rangers 30 - Orioles - 3 . . . Are these guys professionals?
6) Muhammad Ali beating Sonny Liston:
7) 1940 NFL Championship Game - Bears 73 - Redskins 0:
Once again, this might be a little old schooled, but it was still a smack down. Believe it or not, I was actually able to find video evidence of this beat down. Bears fans, rejoice:
