I ran across this story today, and it made me rather sad. They say that Ian Hibell spent 40 years cycling the world. According to the article, he biked enough to go to the moon and back over 40 times. That’s remarkable . . . and to think a careless driver took his life is just sickening. Here’s an excerpt detailing his experiences:
During his travels he was shot at by bandits, had his tent eaten by tropical ants, was sniffed by a lion and chased by elephants. He also enjoyed the hospitality of an Eskimo princess, a Dyak head man in Borneo and African chiefs in the days before every jungle trail had been trodden by parties of backpackers and gap-year students.
He estimated that he had used more than 800 cycle repair kits in covering at least 6,000 miles a year for 40 years, the distance from the Earth to the Moon.
Truly inspirational, truly sad.
